2010 Workplan Ideas

This page contains some of the raw input that was used to produce the 2010 Commission Workplan.

 

Ideas from the Public

 

The following ideas were submitted by the public for inclusion in the Commission Workplan.

 

  • "I believe that the Commission should review whether the amendments made to the Telecommunications Tower Siting Ordinance from 2000 are being adhered to."

 

Ideas from October '09 Commission Meeting

 

  • Add item to monitor city web site more closely
  • Comprehensive plan process, do we want to participate?
  • Fine tuning on community media, and organizations that interact
  • Revisit community forums
  • Collaborate with other commissions on potential tasks
  • Community radio, Low power radio
  • Continue community media future funding task force, more concrete proposal
  • Explore streaming video and archivies of government meetings
  • Technology facilitating open government
  • Support public access and community media, hear from the more often
  • Austin Free-Net and other initiatives
  • How can this commission leverage public access resources through strategic paternerships? Can we develop sustainable models?
  • Finally making headway on ascertainment study, get that done
  • More GTOPs presentations from community groups
  • Issues with broadband technology, wireline and wireless
  • Community media, access TV are a priority for next year

 

Ideas from November '09 Commission Work Session

 

The following ideas are cards submitted at the work session that were not incorporated into the draft at that meeting. The current draft should reflect these items.

 

  • Review wireless antenna and equipment siting requirements.
  • Monitor 311 availability on local phone provider networks.
  • Public information office - review and expand (as needed) output to community media outlets.
  • Possible report (quarterly) from TARA to ensure that commission is not being affected.
  • Community radio - visibility to what it provides to community and citizens, are there oversight roles our commission can play as we do with channelAustin.
  • Low power radio - review of FCC regulations as they may affect city uses versus public/private business users.
  • Adding wireless access point to Zilker Park to increase wi-fi activity.
  • Any way we can participate in the BTOPs grant process?
  • Add open government goals to comprehensive plan.
  • Participate and advocate for inclusion of broadband access and availability on comprehensive plan.
  • Develop use guidelines for B&C use of online collaborative tools.
  • Guidelines for paperless initiative.
  • Periodic updates on Channel 6.
  • Promote streaming video of current and archived city meetings.
  • Try to get community re-engaged with process for website requirements and implementation.
  • Monitor progress of city website development, including RFPs, added features and UI design and branding.
